Who Needs Performance Support on Vacation?

employee performance supportI recently cruised the Caribbean on one of the world’s largest ships. She had 18 decks and served as a temporary home to more than 5,000 passengers and 2,000 crew members. It was like a floating city!

How did I find my way around this massive ship? The cruise line provided us with an amazing, free app! This performance support solution provided an interactive map; up-to-the-minute information on activities; a schedule of booked shows, mealtimes, spa treatments, and excursions; and much more! Who knew I’d use a performance support solution on vacation?

Supporting your Moment of Need

How does this relate to your company? Imagine that one of your employees is performing a critical, but rarely performed, task on the job. You provided employee training on this task as a new hire, but, years later, they can’t recall the steps. You don’t have the time or budget to create a refresher course to support this rare task, nor do you have the time to pull this employee off the job for training. This is where performance support can help!

Let’s go back to the cruise ship for an example. Crew members run passengers through a Muster Drill before every sailing and perform weekly lifeboat drills. However, if there was a call to “abandon ship” would they remember how to react? There isn’t time for refresher training during a real crisis. Instead, crewmembers are supplied with checklists. These performance support tools list who performs what task and in what sequence. Crew members get the information they need, on-demand and at the exact moment of need, to ensure their passengers make it to safety.

Would you like to develop a performance support solution, but aren’t sure how to get started? Let ePath Learning’s Pro Services team throw you a life preserver! Our expert instructional designers can help you identify effective performance support solutions that fit your audience and your budget:

  • Analyze tasks performed by your employees and identify areas that require support
  • Review and organize your existing performance support tools (content curation)
  • Create new performance support tools, such as job aids, custom videos or animations, and micro learning lessons
  • Design a custom interface for learners to easily access performance support tools (via laptop or even on-the-go with a mobile device)
  • Identify and link to tools that allow employees to learn from one another (e.g. blogs, group chats, wikis, social networks, communities of practice, etc.)?
  • And much, much more.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to performance support. Contact us to learn more about how ePath Learning can customize a performance support solution to meet the specific needs of your company.
