Proving the Value of Employee Training Programs

If you’ve ever been tasked with proving the value of your employee training programs then you’ll need to think beyond the number of learners trained or improvements in learner test scores. Although these can be great achievements for a training department, they don’t accurately represent business value. Business value is realized when your training program objectives can be tied to strategic business goals and business outcomes. If you’re looking for some ideas for proving the value of your employee training programs, here’s a list of strategic areas to consider.

  1. Improve Customer Satisfaction
    Improving the quality of your customer service through training can easily lead to an increase in customer satisfaction, retention, and loyalty. An employee’s ability to answer questions, rectify problems quickly, or respond to concerns at the first point of contact makes for a positive client experience and increased satisfaction.
  2. Create Operational Efficiencies
    Regular training and cross training on systems and processes is critical to running efficient operations. Training programs that address performance gaps within your organization create operational efficiencies including increased productivity and process improvements.
  3. Improve Time-to-Market
    Companies are innovating and bringing more new products to market faster to keep pace with customer demand and to effectively reduce competitive pressures. A solid training program is key for bringing employees, external resellers, and distribution partners up-to-speed to support rapid product launches.
  4. Lower Employee Turnover Costs
    Employee turnover costs are expensive, especially when you factor in the costs associated with hiring, onboarding and training, and the cost of the unfilled role. According to the Wall Street Journal, a high employee turnover rate can cost “twice an employee’s salary to find and train a replacement.” Not only are there financial repercussions, a high turnover rate decreases performance and morale. Employee training is known to increase worker productivity, improve employee satisfaction and motivation, and consequently improve employee retention rates.

Although it may take some time to identify the appropriate metrics to develop and track, using business goals and outcomes as your value proposition helps you to demonstrate that your employee training programs are directly impacting the success of your organization. Now that’s value!
