The Power of Online Learning

Online LearningWhy is online learning so powerful – because it’s an enabler. Online learning enables you to do a heck of a lot more than classroom training alone.   For example, we had a client that needed to train 8, 000 offsite sales representatives in a 3 month time frame.   How can you train 8, 000 employees in 3 months in a classroom?   I can’t even fathom how much time that would take let alone how much it would cost! This client was only able to achieve their goals because they deployed their sales training online. That’s powerful. What’s even more powerful is that those 8, 000 employees had access to those training materials whenever they needed them thereafter.   If they’d forgotten some tidbit of information that would help them close a sale, all they had to do was reference their training materials. They had anytime/anywhere access to their learning.

Online learning also enables companies to be far more agile when implementing strategies.   These days, a company’s agility is a key competitive advantage. Companies can’t afford to slowly roll out strategic initiatives; it needs to be fast and furious to beat the competitive pressures that exist today. Online learning makes this possible.   Let’s use your cell phone as an example. How many new products or software updates does your cell phone developer come out with every year? As of January of 2015, a very well-known developer had created well over 600, 000 jobs to support their ecosystem – suffice to say – this developer needs to be agile!

Online learning is also an extremely flexible modality – and flexibility in learning is powerful.   Online learning enables you to develop fact-filled hour long courses, or 5 minute micro-learning modules.   Online learning can be a read and sign document, a game or include social collaboration.   It’s this flexibility that allows corporate trainers to appeal to individuals or the masses.

And lastly, studies show that online learning increases learning retention. According to the Research Institute of America, eLearning increases retention rates 25% to 60% while retention rates of face-to-face training are very low in comparison: 8% to 10%. This is because with eLearning, students have more control over the learning process as well as the opportunity to revisit their training as needed.
